ZEN // SHIN
A solo exhibition by Los Angeles-based artist Jeffrey Sugishita
April 5 - May 2,  2025
Sugishita’s creative practice revolves around the exploration of the material world through traversing both domestic and wild terrains, which then becomes filtered through his cognition and manifests in the form of a barrage of mixed media works. Sugishita’s practice is an investigation of his existence in this material universe, and an ode to his sense of wonder and awe towards the world that he has felt since his childhood.

This sentiment holds no exception even during recent times, where Sugishita lost his home and studio to the Eaton Fires in January 2025. Amidst the smoke and pillars of flame still billowing from what used to be his room and studio, Sugishita commenced to create something new out of experiencing the loss of what had accumulated over the course of his lifetime. The works presented in this exhibition reflects Sugishita’s recent experiences of facing the forces of nature in its fullest, along with several works that survived the cataclysm.

The title of the show, ZEN//SHIN, is derived from the Japanese word zenshin, of which several words share the same phonetics, including words that mean past self, whole body, heart of Zen, all new, and moving forward.

FACADE
art inpired by architecture group show curated by Paul Paiement

February 22 - March 22,  2025
Neo L.A. Gallery is pleased to present Façade, a new group exhibition exploring the influence of modern architecture on eleven contemporary artists. While art through the Romantic Era drew inspiration from the beauty, mystery, and infinite wonders of nature, movements like Constructivism, De Stijl, and Bauhaus in the 20th century shifted the focus to relevant abstract and analytical ideas emerging from the industrial era. These movements blended creativity with mass production principles and functionality, profoundly affecting fine art, commercial art, and architecture. The artists in Façade use diverse media to reflect the impact of these resulting design philosophies on their work today.

Façade features the new and recent artwork of Isaac Aiden, Nicole Cohen, Alexander Couwenberg, Carleton Christy, Frido Evers, Christopher Georgesco, Paul Paiement, Richard Pasquarelli, Alyson Souza, Scott Troxel, and Stephen Wozniak.

'The Light Is Worth The Wait'
November 16 - December 14 2023
Artist statement by Sandy Kupfer
My earliest memory is from 3 years old. Willie and I were rockstars performing for a crowd larger than Spongebob's arena show. I race to the light switch and as quick as darkness settled; Willie crashed to the ground. He malfunctioned like a robot with a super surge of electricity over powering him. The ambulance arrived se4conds after my mom called it. This is why I'm afraid of the dark. The Darkness is an abyss of fear, suffering isolatory emptiness.
But I promise you THE LIGHT IS WORTH THE WAIT.

This series consists of multiple layers of paint built up in a **pentimento style. The application of mark making is versatile. It can provide as scoring; creating a private language. Texture is utilized to provide emphasis. Correlated with this, simple and crude faces provide the viewer with a focal point to read these works. Gestural strokes of mixed color coexist next to spaces of flat, single tone paint.

**pentimento /pĕn″tə-mĕn′tō/ noun An underlying image in a painting, especially one that has become visible when the top layer of paint has turned transparent with age, providing evidence of revision by the artist.

'IN THE ABYSS, BUT GAZING UPWARD'
June 22 - July 3rd 2023

As if a snake constricted a phoenix, morphing the sun’s flames with the crust and core of the earth.
The big bang is an ouroboros, & your eyes are constellations, but I live in Los Angeles so I can’t see them.  It only rains inside the days. The fruit still won’t bloom. It’s only vain to construct a future, when it’s not god’s will it’s doom & my body used to be a tomb until I turned it into a covered canvas. I am my greatest masterpiece & master pieces must be flawed.
Dreams of solitude; but isolation for two as if we left the universe behind in search for a more axiomatic sphere where structures don’t confine, kill, & reduce the ones we cherish. Isolation without a god is whispering to the devil in the mirror while you stare into the entirety of a synthetic ABYSS which is a ls natural as it gets. On repeat. Repeat :|| - Sandy
